Newberry County superintendent dies in vehicular crash

A school district superintendent in Newberry County was killed in a recent vehicular accident involving a deputy’s patrol vehicle, an article of The State reported on April 17.

Bennie Bennett, 56, on April 16 was pronounced dead after he was involved in an accident at 6:26 p.m. on S.C. 219, at the vicinity of Newberry High School. The accident happened after Bennett’s vehicle crashed into a patrol vehicle driven by Deputy David Brandt who was on his way to respond to a different accident. The siren and lights of Brandt’s vehicle were all activated when the collision took place. Brandt was treated at a hospital and he was released the following day. Aside from the coroner’s office, personnel from the S.C. Highway Patrol are also investigating the incident.
